The version 10 update has just come out. It allows you to zoom and magnify the Internet browser. This is irrelevant to me. It allows you to do things on remote play. This is irrelevant to me. For me to be able to "use network features" I have to download and waste 495 MB of space. Playstation is so stupid. I don't use the Internet browser because I use an actual browser on my PC which is so much easier to use with my mouse and keyboard, so this part of the update is more taking the mick than an actual helpful update; and I don't use remote play because I neither have the ability to nor do I need/want to. Playstation is ignorant and forceful in wastage. Let me guess - if I look far enough I will find "this console remains the property of Sony, despite you paying us a lot of money to not-own it. Thanks!"
I want to say what I really mean, but I shall not. My use of expletives might not be well-received.

I don't have a Playstation but I think it would be annoying to have to download an update with a whole load of features that I will never use on it. This sounds like a clear example of what's called 'creeping featurism' where bored app developers add new features that nobody had asked for to notionally improve a product that actually doesn't need improving. (Also, even more frustratingly, the update might not address actual issues raised by users.) It wouldn't matter so much if the new feature was only a light and optional addition to the program (i.e. a small download), but from what you are saying, either the new features take up a lot of data (a 495 MB 'patch') or you have to download and install the new operating system with the added features in order to continue using Playstation.

Yeah, and when people ask Sony "Hey, Sony. Do you mind adding the ability for us to play audio CDs and Playstation 1 games so we don't have to give you more money for the same things again which we own already?", they ignore it and force things like this "update" which we don't need onto us instead. This 459 MB is one example; in other "updates" they included things I don't need, as well. It all adds up. So-called "stability" updates which are supposed to make things smoother seem to do nothing at all. I have noticed no increased smoothness, yet we have to waste drive space on these things. Yeah. If they want me to use features which I don't need, then they can pay me to do that; otherwise, they are trying to force me to have things (i.e. this "update") which I never gave consent to have no my system; therefore, it is like saving their data on my system without my permission - and I think there might be a court case available for that! (Yet I have no money, and Sony would win by default because they can bribe the judge or whatever.)

I'm pretty sure you consented to it when you accepted the terms of service.
Some bigger software products allow you to choose which optional packages to install, which I think is really nice. And in some cases you can disable automatic updates. If neither is the case, then that sucks.

No-one reads those things, and get this - we accept what they tell us. Why not they and us agree? They set out the terms - why can't they and us both agree on what the terms should be, instead of us accepting what they decide? It's a form of indirect slavery (which might be a strong word to use) after we have paid them for it. Do we really own anything?!

That reminds me, I was watching South Park a few days ago with some friends, and one of the episodes that came up was actually about this. Here's a clip from it. It got a lot more gruesome after that.
It's definitely a skewed system, but I'm unsure how it could be realistically improved. Businesses use these things to protect themselves against lawsuits, and likely lack the resources to negotiate the terms with each individual user. For smaller businesses with a wealthy demographic, it is more common to have an individual contract for each client. But large businesses which target a consumer audience might not care unless a significant percentage of users complains.

It is so impersonal and cold and distant. All for money, and not for people. Inhuman, you might say.

I'm my case, that's the reason why I don't buy vidya gaem consoles anymore, I remember buying Xbox One games and noticing that the console needs to download the game from the Internet and not from the disc... which has the full game data inside it. If I wanted to waste my time downloading stuff, I would just use Steam, which it's what I do now. There would be another reason concerning bloatware and developer incompetence (they don't need to have skills since the hardware nowadays is really good), but that's just another topic. I still prefer Microsoft over Sony tho.

I think the storage space is taken up mostly by videos and graphics. That's where most of they money goes when buying games.

Have you tried using a file compressing tool or something (in order to conserve storage space and also play games). There must be some certain tools that would legitimately allow you to defrag the hard drive and keep space, while at the same time keeping files / games.

I know how to do that on a desktop/laptop computer, but I didn't think they existed for consoles.
